Our History

Welcome to the storied legacy of Banjo Refrigeration, a family-owned business with a history as rich and enduring as the cold we specialize in.

The Beginning: 1918

Our journey began in 1918, when Robert Sr. Melsha, just 18 years old, established the Refrigeration Equipment Company. Drawing from his experience and passion for refrigeration, he offered expertise in freon, ammonia, and boiler services.

A Family Business Takes Root

Robert Sr., coming from a hard working immigrant family from Czechoslovakia, instilled a strong work ethic in his three sons: Kenneth, Robert Jr., and Leon "Tunnie" Melsha. Growing up in the business, they expanded operations across state lines.

Tunnie’s earliest memory dates back to riding a train to Colorado with his father at just three years old.

Through the 1960s and 70s, the company grew significantly, employing 75+ union laborers and earning a reputation for reliable, top-notch service.

After the passing of Robert Sr. in 1981, Tunnie and Pub stepped up to lead the business, rebranding it as Banjo Refrigeration Equipment Company.

In 1990, Tunnie and Pub revitalized the company, regaining the original Refrigeration Equipment name and merging it under one brand.

The acquisition of the Sinclair Packing House and an expansive parts warehouse grew the company’s footprint to over 200,000 sq ft, solidifying Banjo Refrigeration’s role as an industry leader.
